Helene Christian English School
Helene Christian English School (HCES) is in its eighth year serving the children and families of the small southern Caribbean island of Santa Elena! This year we have 89 students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through sixth grades who are taught by five islander teachers, two islander teacher assistants, and two American missionary teachers (of which I am one!). The school is in its third year under the governance of an islander school board and its second year with an islander director.
In addition to adding a pre-k class, there are several other new developments for HCES during 2011. We are utilizing the Abeka math workbook series and Hooked on Phonics (introduced last year) with our students and Daily Language Review workbooks and Rosetta Stone are being used for continued teacher professional development. We also divided our 4th through 6th grades classes into boys (taught by me!) and girls (taught by Ms. Sheila).
Our curriculum costs for this year were $2,000 and our total annual expenses are projected to be $23,000 (the islander teachers, teachers assistants, and director are paid positions). Parents pay $15 a month for their child’s education at HCES but this only accounts for about half of the total costs of providing a quality Christian English education on this remote Honduran island.
We need your help! Please consider making a donation to support the children and families of Helene in one of several possible ways:
1). Make one (or more) $150 donations (the value of one student scholarship) Click Here to Give!
2.) Make a donation to help offset the curriculum costs (each math workbook cost about $20) Click Here to Give!
3.) Visit the Mission Encounters International website and see how you could help us in person! Click Here to Go!
4.) Forward this email to someone who may be interested in helping!
I thank God for your prayerful consideration to join God in what He is doing on Helene. “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
In His Grace,
Dominic C. Alvarez
