New Birth at Clinic

Last night we were sitting at the clinic, recovering from hosting a wonderful team from Portland, Oregon, looking forward to a quiet night of rest. God had other plans. Aurora, a Spanish mom of seven, gave birth to her 8th child at the clinic. Dr. Todd delieved the baby around 12:30am. Both mom and baby girl are doing great. Dr. Todd shared with us this morning about the experience. He said, “it has been a long time since I was involved in a birth.” The skills must have back to memory quickly as the child was born safely and was very healthy. Karen, his wife, also a nurse said “all the days in the US that I worked in critical care, this is the first time I have experienced a natural childbirth.” God is gracious and powerful as we experience new life. Dignity Housing Project

Mission Encounters International has partnered with the Abundant Life Foundation, to construct the Dignity Housing Project. On the island of Roatan, Honduras, many people live below poverty. The unemployment rate is at 50%, and someone who can earn $20.00 is making a great wage. Few people are able to earn more than $300 a month, working 6-7 days a week. Of this often times rent costs them over $100. This will give them 4 walls and a roof. There is no floor, only cardboard to step on. No running water, except the rain that leaks through the tin roof. No electricity, no sewage, no conveniences. It is almost impossible to get out of this lifestyle.
The Dignity Housing Project sets a goal to partner with the people of Roatan, giving them a quality home and a sense of dignity and pride where they live. The DHP has no desire to give homes away, that does not solve any problems, it only creates new ones. People wanting to join the community will be given a $10,000 mortgage that they will pay off at $75 a month. $10,000 is only half the cost of the land and the building fees, the rest is already provided by private donors. There is no down-payment and they will not need to get a loan from a bank, because the banks are not even giving loans. People will also pay $25 a month in Home Owner Association Fees, this will cover all their water, septic, gray water, security and more. In the course of a week, they will be able to move from a dilapidated house, into a loving, Christ-based community, and pay less money than they currently do. Also they will not have been given this gift, they will have earned it, and continually work towards it.

Mission Encounters is currently looking for any size teams to build homes and change lives for the calendar year of 2013. Baby Jaiken

Many people have been joining us in prayer this week for baby Jaiken. Last week I recieved a call that our clinic on Helene had a 2 year old boy that was so sick they had to rush him to the hospital. I drove to the hospital and got everything ready. Jaiken had been vomitting blood and his stomach was hard as a rock. He arrived on Satuday and had his first surgery Monday. He was unable to recover and infection was taking over, he required a second surgery on Thursday. I had been visiting the hospital almost daily, speaking to his mom, trying to get things sorted. At Roatan hospital you need to bring everything in, your own food, sheets, toilet paper, everything. His mom was so exhaused after a few days she asked the hospital if she could leave for a bit, they told her they would have her arrested if she left. So I did what I could to bring food and warm clothes, the hospital is noramlly freezing, one of the coldest places on island. Jaiken was not getting better, but was stable enough to fly. Mission Encounters paid for him, his mom, and two of our staff (Dr. Todd is in the photo) to fly Jaiken to San Pedro Sula to a Doctors without Borders hospital. Jaiken has been moved to a Children’s ward of the hospital and will have his third surgery on Tuesday morning. Please pray for the little guy, he doesnt turn two until May, and his mom is completely exhausted.

Update: Jaiken has completed his third surgery and is recovering. He need a lot of medicine for his infections and recovery. MEI had to wire emergency funds to the hospital, as they could not give the medicine until payment has been made. Helene Christian School

Helene Christian English School begins its third week on Monday. We have increased enrollment since last year. An extra teacher assistant who attended our Teacher Training in February has joined our teaching staff of five lead teachers and two assistants. Sheila has the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades this year and is enjoying every minute. Our home office has created a “shopping website” of school needs. Mission Encounters contributes half of the operating budget and salaries for the island teachers while parents are responsible for the other half, Our school board of local folks is strong this year and have already planned a couple of fundraisers to supplement the school income. Again we will be using Hooked on Phonics and A Beka math workbooks in our classrooms. Please pray for our director. school board, and staff as well as students. We are off to a good start.

PHASE I: Identifying the Need March 23rd

Why MEI needs leadership development…the project

This phase will include graduate-level research and a written summary to executive leadership proving the organization’s needs for leadership development. The brief will identify various areas of leadership development crucial to the organization’s needs, including a personal philosophy of leadership with missiological implications specific to the organization’s Biblical values and industry. A WordPress blog will also be setup online for the MEI Board and Staff to follow the process and interact with the progress of the project.

PHASE II: Adopting Appropriate Methods May 4th

Equipment…What models, tools, and measurements to use

This phase will use graduate-level research to identify the best practices, models, tools and measurements for assessing growth and development in identified areas. Benefits and outcomes will be discussed in alignment with organizational goals. Best practices, models, tools, and measurements will be compiled and formatted for practical use. All developed documents will be posted to the blog.

PHASE III: Practical Application July 27th

Processes…How to use the tools effectively within organizational form and function

This phase will use graduate-level organizational leadership skills to shape methods into practical processes for leadership development considering existing organizational structures, form and function. This includes identifying roles, processes and procedures. A multimedia presentation will be created to show processes and applications in visual representation. All presentations will be posted to the blog.

PHASE IV: Implementation & Sustainability August 18th

From project to program…an action plan with safeguards for growth and vitality

This phase will include action steps and a timeline for implementing or phasing-in the various steps and processes of leadership development among MEI’s everyday organizational demands. It will highlight organizational benchmarks for evaluation and review of the program’s sucess while offering solutions for sustainability. The project will culminate in presentation and budget proposal to MEI’s Board of Directors in January 2013.

Mary’s House

Mary was Married to John, who served in the US military. After service it was found out he never became an American citizen and he was deported to his home country, Honduras. He came to Helene where his family was and where he was born as a child. Now in his 40’s he marries Mary on the island, and works closely with our mission for several years. He then got cancer and died leaving Mary with several children. Her home is less than 200 SQ feet. As you will see from the pictures it needed a new roof. Your dollars were given to make that happen bless you for loving others. Locally two guys were put to work to repair the home and they were paid for their labor! Ted Thomas who works with us headed up the job and Whitsel a local worked helped.
